Justice League Unlimited
Far From Home

Original Airdate - 04/15/06

1000 years in the future, the battle between good and evil rages on, but the name Justice League remains hallowed. The members of the newfangled Legion of Super-Heroes tried to pick up the mantle of the JLU, but instead they all got captured except for Brainiac 5 and Bouncing Boy.

Being super smart, Brainiac 5 hatches a plan to hijack members of the Justice League from what we know as the present day Cartoon Network DCU and bring them forward in time to help rescue the rest of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Being in the future and all, Brainiac already knows that three members from the Justice League are destined to travel to the future and join in this fight. Bouncing Boy reminds him that according to historical records three JLU members traveled to the future, but only two ever went back.

These kind of prophecies are rarely cheerful.

Back in the present day aboard the Watchtower, Supergirl and Green Lantern run through some fighting drills in a holographic simulator which I have decided to call the "hazard area." Superman and Green Arrow watch Supergirl fight while having a heart to heart about her likes, dislikes and of course what kind of tree she would be if she were one.

After going a few rounds with Queen Bee, Dr Cyber, Blockbuster and Atomic Skull, Kara waits for John to tell her what she did wrong, but John says he has nothing left to teach her. Just as he is about to let Kara try and snatch a pebble out of his hand, an orb of light surrounds Supergirl, Green Lantern and Green Arrow and they vanish. Superman arrives moments later looking befuddled.

In the future, Brainiac 5 barely gets out "hello, my name is" before Supergirl attacks him. Green Arrow calms her down so Brainiac can tell his side of the story. The Fatal Five attacked the Legion headquarters and managed to capture all but two of the Legion members 'cause most of them have lame powers.

Seriously, think about it. Five villains managed to capture a team consisting of dozens of members except for Brainiac 5 and a guy named Bouncing Boy.

Anyway, they surmise the Fatal Five must have something big planned to risk taking on the entire Legion. The JLU members are skeptical but agree to help. Coincidentally, Fatal Five members the Emerald Empress and the Persuader choose that moment to attack Legion headquarters. After a lengthy fight that goes both ways, The Terrible Two escape with Green Lantern and Bouncing Boy now under their mind control.

Finally, they have Bouncing Boy under their control!

Supergirl, Green Arrow and Brainiac 5 regroup. Brainy and Supergirl flirt while also working on a way to track the Fatal Five. They are able to trace Green Lantern's JLU comlink to a ship that is headed towards the Central Capitol Planet, which the Fatal Five has tried to destroy before. It's up to the remaining three heroes to stop the Fatal Five, an army of mind controlled Legion members and Green Lantern from succeeding this time.

With only a few episodes left, Justice League Unlimited can swing for the fences each episode without worrying about developing longer plotlines. Supergirl eventually joins the Legion of Super-Heroes at the end of this episode, which basically resolves her character in the Bruce Timm DCU (unless there is a Legion of Super-Heroes show -- which is being developed, but with Superboy instead of Supergirl).

I mentioned a few reviews back that it seems like each of these final shows feels like a pilot episode for another potential show. "Far From Home" continues that pattern as Brainiac 5 and Bouncing Boy's characters are firmly established and the basic premise of the Legion is explained. While I won't read their comic, I'd totally watch their show.

Nothing but top notch work by Timm, McDuffie and crew this week. The action was great. The character moments were great. The story was great. The dialogue was great. The voice over work was great. The animation was great.

I'm amazed this show wasn't canceled years ago.
