E3 got
underway today as thousands of game fans disguised as industry
workers invaded the Staples center. For the most part everyone
will be talking about the big games like Half -Life 2, Halo
2, Doom 3 as well as the two new portable platforms soon to
be released, but we here at Fanboy Planet wanted to shine
the light on a few other games that should make you our geek
culture sit up and take notice.
Spider-Man 2: The Game
Platform: PS2, PC, Xbox, GC
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Treyarch Invention, LLC
Release Date: 06/29/2004
Genre: Action
They say: Two years have passed since Peter Parker
first hit the streets of New York City as the conflicted
crime-fighter Spider-Man. Now he finds himself battling
his most diabolical villain yet, the mechanized, multi-tentacled
Doc Ock. The nefarious Doc Ock was once Dr. Otto Octavius,
a brilliant nuclear physicist. But a freak accident transformed
him from a timid researcher to a criminally insane megalomaniac
who blames Spider-Man for his horrible transformation. Now
the scientist Peter once idolized for his remarkable intellect
has marked our web-slinger for death.
Experience total freedom as you soar through the concrete
canyons of a living, breathing Manhattan, complete with
familiar landmarks and bustling, traffic-clogged streets.
True non-linear gameplay means you can web-swing wherever
you like, whenever you like, exploring the vast metropolis
and reliving scenes from the Spider-Man 2 movie. Combat
petty thugs and aid NYC citizens in challenging side-quests,
or pursue the lunatic Doc Ock and other classic Spider-Man
rivals. The decision is yours.
We say: Spider-Man in a non-linear environment
similar to Grand Theft Auto
makes our "Awesome Sense" tingle.

100 Bullets
Platform: PS2, Xbox
Publisher: Acclaim
Developer: Acclaim Studios Austin
Release Date: 10/01/2004
Genre: Action
They say: 100 Bullets features an original story
and script from the creator of the 100 Bullets universe,
Brian Azzarello. A highly-respected talent with the comic
book industry, Azzarello has also written for such renowned
characters as Batman, Superman and Sgt. Rock. Introducing
"R.A.G.E.", a new form of gunplay that takes game action
sequences to a new level of cinematic intensity.
Art direction by Eduardo Risso, the award-winning artist
of the 100 Bullets comic series. Hollywood-esque action
and gameplay, including multiple weapons, hostage taking,
melee, and fully interactive environments. Play through
the game as two characters, Cole Burns and Snow Falls, intertwining
good, bad, and revenge. Travel from Atlantic City to LA
to Paris to the Underworld of NYC.
We say: We are tempted to write this one off as
another comic book based game that won't live up to the
hype, but with Azzarello and Risso involved, you have to
assume they are not going to put their names on a sub-par
product. We'll wait and see.
